Dr Mahady is a practising gastroenterologist in both public and private practice. She completed specialist training at Royal Prince Alfred & Westmead Hospitals, Sydney. She has worked as a consultant gastroenterologist in Sydney and currently holds public appointments at Royal Melbourne Hospital & St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, with private consulting rooms in Brighton.

Dr Mahady has a strong research interest, having completed a Masters in Medicine (Clinical Epidemiology) at the University of Sydney followed by a PhD in epidemiology (University of Sydney). She previously held an academic appointment at the University of Sydney where she taught principles of evidence based medicine and epidemiology to medical students and postgraduate Masters students for 5 years and continues to hold an honorary appointment there. In addition, she is currently appointed as a senior lecturer in clinical epidemiology at Monash University (School of Public Health & Preventive Medicine). She is active in liver and epidemiology research, having published widely in top ranking journals and continues to be active in post doctoral research. She is specialist editor for the journal Gut and sits on a number of government advisory committees.
